MAYOR JOHN CURRAN ANNOUNCES RECEIPT OF SKIN CANCER PREVENTION MINI-GRANT

Mayor John Curran is pleased to announce that the City of Woburn has been awarded $2,000 from the Massachusetts Health Officers Association (MHOA) as part of its skin cancer prevention awareness program. Stating the importance of spreading awareness about skin cancer prevention, Curran said, "Woburn residents are outdoor and sports enthusiasts. With our summer season beginning in a few months, we really need to keep in mind the dangers of the sun, particularly for youngsters. Having information on hand at fun runs and summer events will be a great way to remind ourselves to enjoy the sun intelligently and safely."

Curran explained that the funds were allocated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, through its federally funded Cancer Prevention and Control Program. His office was notified in early March, by a letter stating that there were many outstanding and creative proposals. Grant Development Coordinator, Maura E. Greaney, stated that while 47 communities submitted applications, Woburn was one of only 18 awardees to share in the $28,200 available. Greaney said the average award was just over $1500, so Woburn’s proposal was among the best.

She said, "Our proposal was well-received because it was collaborative and feasible. The money will be used to purchase shade canopies for our playing fields as well as umbrellas for lifeguard stations at our public pools. In addition, as a grant recipient, we are welcome to free information materials from the DPH regarding safe sun practices which will be available at all city-sponsored events." Greaney also said that Board of Health Director Jack Fralick and Recreation Director Thomas Jones helped conceptualize how the MHOA mini-grant would be utilized.

Sun exposure causes 90% of all skin cancers, with 70-80% of sun exposure occurring before the age of 18. The Mayor encourages interested residents to contact Maura Greaney at 781-932-4429 for information regarding sun safety practices. MHOA materials will also be posted in City Hall.
