Woburn Wins grant for new high school.
Mayor John Curran announces award of $125,000 with potential savings of close to $2,000,000.
The city received notice from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) that the high school project has been selected for the Green School Initiative Pilot Program. Initially, the city will receive $125,000 for design costs. When the design is approved we will receive an additional $400,000 for construction. Additionally, this energy savings component will enable the city to seek two more percentage points of reimbursement from the school building assistance program which could result in $1,290,000 of savings.
A great deal of vision and effort has gone into this project. The school building committee and Tappe Associates, Inc. are to be commended for their success. When this project was presented to the community in June it was stated that every effort would be made to keep the cost down by seeking alternative funding. I am happy to report that the city is already meeting this goal so early in the project.
The new school includes a photo voltaic array and a separate fuel cell energy system. These facilities are renewable energy systems that will allow the city to provide energy to the new high school and White School at substantially reduced annual energy costs. The MTC anticipates that the new school will be a model of energy efficiency.
