MAYOR CURRAN LOBBIES CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS FOR SUPPORT OF FREEDOM’S WAY DESIGNATION AS NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA

Mayor Curran announced his continued support for the designation of Freedom’s Way as a National Heritage Area by the 108th Congress. The City of Woburn has been included among the thirty-six Massachusetts’ communities of the Freedom’s Way Heritage Area, which connects the region’s cultural and political history with its natural resources. Stated Curran: "By passing this congressional act, our region will be better equipped to garner stewardship guidance, protection for our natural landscape, and innovative planning initiatives for the region. Through participation in the development of our Vision 2020 Master Plan, the public has prioritized preservation of open space and the continued exploration of Woburn’s rich cultural history. The passage of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Act is in line with our goals as we look toward the future. It will help boost tourism and spur economic growth within the region, while leveraging our environmental and educational resources."

The Mayor has written key members of the congressional delegation to both thank them for their past support and to urge their continued advocacy as the petition is reintroduced this year. The bill passed the Senate, but was not enacted by the House during the 107th Congress. In his letter to Congressman Markey, Mayor Curran wrote: "The legacy of Freedom’s Way includes the chronicling of historical leaders who have connected the use of landscape to a deeper understanding of ideas about independence, individual rights, conservation, social justice, and democracy. In the spirit of these pioneers, the Freedom’s Way Heritage Area utilizes local resources to shape the landscape of democracy, invent the character and environment of New England, while also respecting and rediscovering the rich heritage of the native landscape. The City of Woburn is both hopeful and enthusiastic that with your continued advocacy, Freedom’s Way will become designated as a National Heritage Area in 2003."

The Mayor also invites interested residents to contact his office to learn how they can participate in the Freedom’s Way Heritage Area campaign. He concluded: "Public participation is the key to an active and engaged citizenry. The City of Woburn is proud to have been included as part of Freedom’s Way, and understands that its designation as a National Heritage Area will increase the cultural, educational, and environmental opportunities for generations to come."
