FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From: The Office of Mayor John Curran
April 8, 2003
MAYOR JOHN CURRAN RELAYS OPTIMISTIC NEWS FROM NSTAR REGARDING IMPROVEMENT OF POWER DELIVERY
While the City awoke to what many hope will be the last snowfall of the year, Mayor John Curran was looking toward the summer this morning at a briefing with NSTAR representatives. Stated Curran: "I am optimistic about both the details and the timeline of the NSTAR Action Plan for the City of Woburn. NSTAR has responded to the concerns of both the City and the public, and I am encouraged by the progress thus far. NSTAR has taken significant strides to improve the quality of services by taking aggressive and quick action: the electrical load capacity for our commercial center will be increased by 75%. I am particularly encouraged to learn that the improvements are ahead of NSTARs typical schedule, with completion of the upgrades scheduled for June, in enough time before peak summer heat." However, Mayor Curran expressed his intent to monitor the progress to ensure that all upgrades are completed in a timely fashion.
Todays public meeting was a follow-up to the January 30th meeting when the blackouts in East Woburn last summer were first discussed. Major improvements include the installation of a new, larger circuit servicing Dragon Court to New Boston Street; an automatic circuit will also replace the manual/remote circuit at Pond Street Station in Winchester; an automatic transfer switch has been installed on Cedar Street/Cummings Park; and a new switch has also been installed on Mishawum Road. Mayor Curran commented: "These upgrades will sectionalize electrical output loads, giving NSTAR better ability to monitor and prevent power outages. The fact that these improvements are being completed so quickly means we should see increased efficiency before the hottest months of summer. The installation of a third transformer in the Dragon Court Transfer Station will also increase the size of that facility by more than 50%--a major improvement."
NSTAR reviewed with the Mayor the results of inspections conducted of all overhead and underground circuits. Those repairs are also scheduled for completion by June. In addition, NSTAR has developed a tree-trimming plan, which will maintain 120 miles of trees along the targeted service areas. Lastly, Mayor Curran wants to inform residents that planned outages might be necessary during the improvement implementation phase, but he has been assured by NSTAR that these will be scheduled during off-peak hours, and NSTAR will inform clients by U.S. mail.
