CITY OF WOBURN SECURES $7,000 FOR YOUTH HEALTH WORKSHOP SERIES
Mayor John C. Curran announced today that the City of Woburn has been awarded a mini-grant from the Northwest Suburban Community Health Alliance (CHNA 15) and the Lahey Clinic Community Benefits Initiative to present a city-wide youth health workshop series. Entitled "Calling All Collaborators: City of Woburn Youth Health Workshop Series," the proposal was prepared by Maura Greaney, Grant Development Coordinator, and awarded the maximum amount granted by the CHNA 15 program. Though this is a mini-grant program, Greaney stated that the award process was competitive. "I was told that less than half of the applicants received funding," stated Greaney.
Mayor Curran stated: "Woburns concern for increased public health awareness, educational programming, and leveraging of community resources has been mandated not only by city government, but by residents. This grant award will help enable the City to continue outreach to youth on a targeted, programmatic basis."
The funds will be distributed to the Fire Department, the Police Department, the Recreation Department and Social Capital, Inc., to run city-sponsored workshops and programs related to the improvement of youth health and development. Both the Board of Health and the School Department will be participating, and the Mayors office will function as lead facilitator of the series. "Part of what is crucial to the success and evaluation of this project is how information will be shared. Residents can look to my office for the schedule of events and details on what is learned from the series," stated Mayor John Curran.
The grant budget was set-up to reach a broad youth audience, on a range of issues: "The Police Department, through its Office of Community Service will receive $2000 to host Urban Improv workshops on substance abuse. The Fire Department will receive $1000 to conduct home and fire safety workshops for fifth and six graders. The Recreation Department will run clinics that address self esteem, proper nutrition, and exercise safety with $1000. Social Capital, Inc., will receive $1000 to conduct a youth/adult dialogue, and an additional $2000 for its Youth Council to oversee a youth health needs assessment," stated Greaney.
