FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From: The Office of Mayor John Curran
April 24, 2003
MAYOR JOHN CURRAN AND REPRESENTATIVE CAROL DONOVAN ANNOUNCE $5,000 GRANT FOR URBAN FORESTRY
Mayor John C. Curran announced today that the City of Woburn has been awarded a $5000 mini-grant from the Department of Environmental Management for the purchase of trees. Part of the Mass ReLeaf program, Curran stated that the citys grant request was awarded in full. Stated Mayor Curran: "The City of Woburn is committed to enhancing community life by utilizing urban forestry as a community development strategy through public/private partnerships. By doing so, the City will increase its awareness of the environment, while utilizing natural ecosystems to enhance air and water quality, reduce blight, and reconfigure public spaces, particularly in our downtown area."
Stated Representative Donovan: "We are appreciative to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management for this opportunity to plant additional trees in our city. Urban forestry complements our designs for community parks, new redevelopment construction projects, such as our schools, and all public way construction. In particular, the completion of planting on the Russell Street Corridor will be a major project financed by this Mass ReLeaf grant."
Maura E. Greaney, Grant Development Coordinator, prepared the application, in consultation with Department of Public Works Superintendent, Fred Russell. Concluded Russell: "Woburn has rededicated itself to striking a balance between urban renewal and environmental protection. By awarding us this grant, DEM will help us to continue the work we have begun." Greaney also commented that Congressman Markey and State Senator Charles Shannon were helpful in supporting this grant application, in addition to the Woburn Residents Environmental Network and Social Capital, Inc.
