Mayor John C. Curran Announces Hours of New Horn Pond Facilities
Horn Pond became even more walker-friendly this summer, as the brand new restrooms have opened for the summer. Open during the summer from 7:00am to dusk, seven days a week from June 21st until September 21st, the construction of the facilities was a collaborative public-private venture intended to address the needs of the thousands of residents and surrounding neighbors who enjoy Horn Pond and its conservation lands. The restrooms include baby-changing stations in both the mens and womens rooms and are handicapped accessible. Residents should also be aware that an emergency call box is located in the parking lot by the facilities, in the event of a public safety situation.
Labor and materials for the project were donated by Cummings Properties as well as by local contractor, G.W. Gately. Mayor Curran stated: "The City would like to thank the private businesses who contributed generously to make this project a reality. Woburns Department of Public Works and City Engineering Office are to be commended for their efforts as well. Designed to reflect the style of the 1872 Pump Station, the building is not only functional and state-of-the art, it incorporates historical aesthetics, so as not to detract from the natural beauty of Horn Pond."
The facilities are important from a recreation standpoint as well as promoting environmental protection of one of our Citys greatest assets. Fred Russell, Superintendent of Public Works, stated that the DPW coordinated the construction, provided the utilities and their connections, built the walkways and completed the landscaping designs, in addition to excavation that was required. Russell also stated that the walkways and landscaping adjacent to the site allowed for the inclusion of the Gold Star Mothers memorial.
