FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From: The Office of Mayor John Curran
July 22, 2003
Mayor Curran Announces Downtown Streetlight
Project Nearing Completion
Summer nights in downtown are looking a little
brighter, as Mayor John C. Curran announced
that the Woburn Square Streetlight Replacement
project is nearing completion. The project was
made possible by a Massachusetts Community Development
Block Grant Ready Resource Fund grant of $400,000
secured by the Woburn Redevelopment Authority
in January of 2002. Stated Mayor Curran, "This
is just another successful example of the City
of Woburn's revitalization efforts. Through
the beautification of our downtown, we hope
to stimulate economic growth, increase the quality
of life for our residents, and maintain the
balance between urban renewal and a sense of
community."
The scope of the project includes the installation
of 84 new decorative streetlights similar to
those placed around the Busy Bend several years
ago. The Department of Public Works is currently
installing the electrical conduit, brick trim,
and streetlights on Main Street, from Franklin
to High Streets, as well as around the Woburn
Common. Superintendent of Public Works, Frederick
W. Russell, stated that underground electrical
work from Franklin Street to the Woburn Common
was completed in June, while installation of
the brick sidewalk trim is currently ongoing.
He estimated that the entire project would be
completed by the end of the summer, depending
upon the delivery of the lights, which require
offsite fabrication.
